The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
